An Expeditionary Learning School in Washington, DC
Capital City seeks an experienced, creative, and highly motivated educator to teach 6th grade at our new Upper School campus. The school will open in fall 2008 with grades 6-9 and extend to 12th grade by 2011. Capital City serves a diverse population and seeks a teaching staff reflective of our student body. The many and varied responsibilities of the founding 6th grade teacher include:
* Planning/teaching all core subjects to a class of 25 students
* Utilizing a workshop model to differentiate instruction and promote student engagement
* Developing learning expeditions, curriculum, and projects
* Regularly assessing student progress and using data to plan for instruction
* Supervising and mentoring a teaching fellow who assists full-time in the classroom
* Meeting and planning regularly with a team that includes a teaching fellow and an Inclusion Teacher
* Collaborating with 6th grade teacher at the Lower School campus to ensure program consistency
* Planning and implementing a social curriculum that includes elements of the Responsive Classroom approach (e.g. morning meeting, rules and logical consequences, academic choice)
* Collaborating with staff and students to implement consistent structures and develop traditions at our new school
* Involving students in fieldwork and service that deepens understanding and interest
* Supporting students with completing portfolios and preparing for student-led conferences
* Attending a summer institute and weekly professional development sessions
* Communicating regularly with parents and completing narrative progress reports
The current Lower School, founded in 2000, serves students in grades PK-8 and is recognized as a national model for school reform. In 2007 Capital City had the highest reading and math scores among District charter elementary schools. Capital City implements the Expeditionary Learning model in tandem with the common principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES). Through Expeditionary Learning (www.elschools.org), teachers craft expeditions that incorporate projects, research, fieldwork and service to support students in meeting rigorous standards. The CES principles (www.essentialschools.org) emphasize equity, depth over breadth, student leadership, and authenticity. Capital City's program also emphasizes a strong social curriculum, a commitment to diversity, a strong inclusion model and the integration of arts into the curriculum. There is a strong focus on professional development and a collegial atmosphere ideal for teacher learning and professional growth.
At least two of the following are required:
Masters degree in elementary education or special education, 2+ years of full-time teaching experience, standard teaching certification. Spanish-speakers are desired. Additionally candidates should have: a commitment to meeting the needs of a diverse population, experience working in urban environments, strong knowledge of pedagogy and experience teaching in a constructivist way, proven ability to work as a member of a team, strong leadership capabilities, and a commitment to their own learning.
