Thora Balk, PK Classroom Teacher
Thora joined Capital City as a founding teacher in 2000. Prior to coming to Capital City, Thora taught Kindergarten for two years in Milwaukee Public Schools and for one year at John Eaton Elementary School here in Washington DC. Thora was a Washington Post 2019 Teacher of Year Finalist.
She received her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Scranton and her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has served on the Instructional Leadership Team, as a member of the Math Leadership Cadre, as the Coordinator of School Culture, and Early Childhood Director.
She has also participated on many curriculum work teams. In 2011 - 2012, while on sabbatical leave, Thora was an instructional coach and mentor with the Center for Inspired Teaching, where she taught the math, science, and social studies course for Early Childhood fellows earning certification through the Center for Inspired Teaching.
Thora’s children, Jener, Minna, and Anders, attend Capital City.
