Q&A: Showing thanks for Capital City

Students recently visited Capital City alumni while on their college trips.

The strong sense of community at Capital City goes well beyond our hallways and classrooms. It even carries on after Capital City  through our now extensive alumni network. This past October, the College Counseling Office took seniors to visit colleges in Virginia and Delaware and while there, they caught up with some Capital City alumni. Following this experience and closing out College Application and Exploration month, on November 4, 100% of the Class of 2023 applied to college during our annual March to the Mailbox, a schoolwide event that all seniors have done since 2013.

For this month’s Q & A, we reconnected with alumni that supported the recent college visits for seniors and asked them to reflect on what they are thankful for from Capital City.

Jaiye, Class of 2020

When did you start attending Capital City? 9th Grade

Where are you attending college? I currently attend Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA

What is something you are thankful for about Capital City? I am thankful for how Capital City prepares its students academically. I came to ODU with a strong academic background and with skills from opportunities and experiences that Capital City opened up to me to become an active participant. The school also strengthened my sense of community service and engagement as I have been involved with the various organizations and offices on campus.

Is there someone at Capital City you are thankful for? I am grateful got a few people at Capital City!

  • I am grateful to my science teachers for creating a curriculum that allowed me to engage and see my love for the sciences.
  • I am thankful for Mrs. Tatum-Gormes for being a wonderful track and cheer coach, and best of all, math teacher who I can still contact for support with my college math classes.
  • I am thankful for Mrs. Carter as I loved having an advisory teacher and AP Lit teacher who I could always count on to liven up the day somehow. I also thank her for strengthening my English skills which allowed me to get a 5 on the AP exam (yes, I'm still gleeful about that).
  • Mrs. Jackson for creating many opportunities and getting me in the "get to know" so I can better prepare for college and always giving advice.
  • Can't forget Mrs. Asogwa!! I appreciate having her as my dance teacher and making dance so exciting and educational that I wanted to do it for my four years in high school. I joined my African Student Association's dance team in college!!
  • Special Mention: Mrs. Dobbs she currently does not work at Capital City anymore because she went back home to go back to school but she was the physics teacher and I really appreciate the conversations we had my junior year about my major and what to expect in college and what courses I would need to take, and classes that I should've taken then to go with me to university with a strong foundation. But all in all that conversation and her class really drove home that I love science, and even though sometimes it's hard and confusing, it can be very exciting.
