Welcome Ms. Johnson!

With nine years of experience teaching and leading in public schools, Capital City is excited to welcome Míchelle Johnson as the new Lower School Principal. She will begin working with students and staff over the summer to prepare for the 2019-2020 school year.

"Capital City is a community that has a clear strategy for improving learning outcomes for students, engaging families, and supporting the growth and development of its staff," Ms. Johnson exclaimed. "I am looking forward to spending the summer learning more about the accomplishments of the Lower School as well as the areas of growth that will help us get better at giving students what they need in order to thrive."

Three months ago, a team composed of teachers, parents and administrators embarked on a mission to find a new leader for our lower school that would share the Capital City vision and passion for education and equity.

"Our Principal Selection Team began the process by creating a list of traits our new principal should have," explained Karen Dresden, Head of School. "While we didn't think it was possible to find a principal that would check all the boxes on our list, Míchelle Johnson did just that."

Prior to Capital City, Ms. Johnson was the principal of Mundo Verde Public Charter School, a bilingual EL Education school in the District. In addition to this deep understanding of the EL model, our little ones loved her during the selection process! She is also fluent in Spanish, a critical skill that supports our commitment to better serve and strengthen our relationships with all our families.  Learn more about Míchelle and the selection process in this letter sent to families.

"I am eager to begin building strong, long-lasting relationships with students, families, and staff," shared Ms. Johnson. "It is only in genuine collaboration together that we can continue to push the growth of this community."
